PH Para Chess Team hauls three golds in Asian Online tourney

The Philippines hauled three gold medals and one silver in the Asian Online Chess Championships for Players with Disabilities Sunday.

Jasper Rom topped the Physically Impaired Open category, Menandro Redor ruled the Visually Impaired Open section, and Cheryl Angot reigned supreme in the Physically Impaired Women division for the Filipinos’ triple-gold harvest.

Cheyzer Crystal Mendoza finished second behind teammate Angot to account for the country’s lone silver.

The Singapore-based Rom drew with Pour Armin Rahmat of Iran in the fifth and final round to finish with 4.5 points and run away with the crown.

Redor likewise split the point in his final game against Aydogdy Atabayev of Turkmenistan to end up with 4.5 points and the title.

Angot, for her part, had to pull the rug from under top seed Woman International Master Irina Ostry of Kyrgyzstan to wind up with a title-clinching 4.5 points, or a full point ahead of second placer Mendoza, a winner over India’s R P Kanishri.

The team is backed by the Philippine Sports Commission, the Philippine Paralympic Committee and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.
