Currently, he is the incumbent Governor of the BSP and has been since 2019. He accepted the DOF nomination.
Diokno, 74, previously tenured within the Cabinet of the Philippines as the Secretary of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) under the both Estrada administration from 1998 to 2001, and then under the incumbent Duterte administration from 2016 to 2019.
In terms of education, Diokno graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) in 1968, and later earned two Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Economics from UPD.
Diokno, in 1976, earned a Master’s degree in Political Economy from Johns Hopkins and then, in 1981, a Ph.D in Economics from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
Fellow economist and re-electionist lawmaker Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda has described Diokno as one of Marcos’ strongest Cabinet appointees thus far.
“I am elated by the selection of BSP Governor Ben Diokno to the Department of Finance. He is, by far, the strongest appointment President-elect BBM has made. He is well respected internationally, and has the gravitas and experience necessary to steer the country's finances through the headwinds it is facing,” Salceda said to the press on Thursday, May 26, the same day that Diokno was named for the Marcos cabinet.
As DOF Secretary, Diokno will lead the executive department in the administration of fiscal policies, the management of financial resources, public sector debt, assets, and corporations owned by the national government.
