He will declare to you the things that are coming

REFLECTIONS TODAY

The Spirit will not make new revelations, but rather will shed light on what has already occurred and has been said by Jesus that are relevant for the future age. The disciples can only learn their meaning as they faithfully live the commands of Jesus in their lives day by day. Jesus knows that they will not be able to bear everything that he will say. People are historical beings, and they only understand as events unfold to them each day. Instead, Jesus entrusts the disciples to the action of the Spirit in their lives; he will reveal to them all truth. Once more, the intimate relationship among the Father, the Son, and the Spirit is seen in this passage. The words that belong to the Father are handed over by the Son to the Spirit. What belongs to the Father and the Son will in turn be declared by the Spirit to the disciples. The disciples participate in this loving communion of the Trinity. This itself is a great gift enabled for them by Jesus. All who follow Jesus can draw strength from this communion.

GOSPEL • John 16:12-15

Jesus said to his disciples: “I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.”
