Male hostage-taker killed in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay


ZAMBOANGA CITY - Police shot and killed a man who took a female insurance office cashier as hostage in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay on Monday (May 23) afternoon.

Based on a report from the Police Regional Office-9, the suspect was identified as Eduardo Pihana Andres, a resident of Purok Lubok, Tungawan Municipality, Zamboanga Sibugay Province.

Earlier, Andres pointed at a 75-year-old Rogelio Catacotan and took the senior aboard a tricycle driven by Zandrew Cingco, 49.

Andres disembarked at the downtown area and entered the Pacific Insurance Union office beside the Land Transportation Office in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay where he pointed a gun towards Marilyn Panghilayan and Irene Leyson.

The two women ran away but Andres was able to grab Leyson and held her hostage in front of the LTO.

Responding policemen negotiated with the suspect to lower his gun but the latter declined to cooperate, prompting authorities to shoot the suspect.

Andres was killed on the spot with a lone shot in the head. Leyson was unharmed.

Police are still investigating the incident.
