PH fencers settle for bronze in team categories


Filipino fencers settled for bronze finishes in the team categories Wednesday, May 18 in the 31st Southeast Asian Games at the Hanoi Indoor Games Palace in Vietnam.

The quartet of Jylyn Nicanor, Queen Denise Dalmacio, Allaine Nicole Cortey, and Kemberly Camahalan cruised past Cambodia, 45-30, in the elimination round but yielded to eventual champion Vietnam in the semifinal, 45-29.

Vietnam also showed dominance in the gold medal round as it pounced on silver medalist Singapore, 45-39.

In men's action, Nathaniel Perez, Sammuel Tranquilan, Prince John Felipe, and Michael Nicanor bannered the foil team category but fell five points short against Malaysian fencers, 45-50.

So far, the national fencing team has garnered seven medals highlighted by a golden finish by Samathan Catantan in the women's individual foil.

Catantan also helped Maxine Esteban, Wilhelmina Lozada, and Justine Gail Tinio capture silver in the foil team category while Noelito Jose and Nathaniel Perez earlier placed first runner-up in the men's epee and foil, respectively.

In other team's play, the quartet of Anna Gabriella Guinto, Ivy Claire Dinoy, Lozada, and Tinio likewise settled for bronze in the women's epee team event.
