NYC encourages public to join #RaiseYourHandForKids challenge for child labor awareness

National Youth Commission

The National Youth Commission (NYC) on Wednesday, May 18, urged everyone to take part in the #RaiseYourHandForKids challenge in line with the ongoing 5th Global Conference for the Elimination of Child Labor.

The said conference, being held in South Africa from May 15 to 20, aims to raise awareness about child labor and calls for quick solutions to end the global problem by 2025.

The #RaiseYourHandForKids challenge is done by drawing a big smiley face on one’s palm, raising one’s hand, taking a photo of one’s self, and posting on social media with the hashtag #RaiseYourHandForKids.

It also encouraged participants to tag at least three friends in their post to help spread the movement.

This simple gesture is a way of expressing one’s support for a world without child labor, without launching into speech.

There are currently 160 million child laborers worldwide since 2020, according to the International Labor Organization (ILO).

It means one out of 10 children is already working instead of focusing on their studies or any other youth activities, this figure is still expected to rise due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
