Comelec says 23 percent overseas voting turnout so far

The overseas voting has a 23 percent voting turnout so far, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Thursday, May 5.

Commissioner Marlon Casquejo (Ali Vicoy/MB)

"Out of 1,697,130 overseas voters 385,437 already voted," Comelec Commissioner Marlon Casquejo said in a press briefing in Manila.

He said these are from the Americas 56,550, Asia Pacific 139,041, Europe 41,719, and Middle East/Africa 148,127.

With the trend, Casquejo said, they expect the turnout in this polls to exceed the 30 percent overseas voting turnout in 2016.

"We feel the reason for it is the vote anywhere concept," he said.

As of May 5, Casquejo said, 2,245 have applied for vote anywhere and 1,791 of them were approved.

He said others were denied because they are deactivated, not registered voters among others.

Overseas voting period for the May 2022 polls will run from April 10 to May 9.
