San Juan LGU boosts free internet connection services to students

Understanding the importance of stable and fast internet connection to public school students participating in blended learning, the San Juan City local government announced on Monday, May 2, that it will further boost the capabilities of all free internet connections it has installed in the students' homes.

"Ang mga libreng internet connection po sa inyong mga tahanan na ipinakabit ng Pamahalaang Lungsod ng San Juan para sa online education sa pamamagitan ng Learning Management System (LMS) ay ganap nang binuksan bilang Full Service Fiber Optic Internet Connection (All free internet connections installed in your homes by the San Juan City Government for the online education of students through the Learning Management System have been fully opened as a Full Service Fiber Optic Internet Connection)," incumbent San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said in a Facebook post.

"Ang libre at mabilis na internet connection na ito ay maaaring gamitin para sa pag-aaral, research, panonood, pakikipag-ugnayan sa inyong mga mahal sa buhay, paggamit ng iba’t ibang apps at social media sites at iba pang online services at activities (The fast and free internet connection may now be used for studying, researching, watching, connecting with your loved ones, use of different apps and social media sites, and other online services and activities)," he added.

On May 7 last year, the San Juan City local government, in partnership with Converge ICT Solutions Inc., launched its Fiber Optic Internet and Learning Management System that provides free internet connection to the city’s public school students to help them in their online classes amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The installation started in 2020 for over 12,000 students living in over 6,000 households.

Zamora had previously said that improving the education of San Juan's youth is one of his administration's top priorities even amid the ongoing pandemic.

During his recent Manila Bulletin (MB) Hot Seat interview, Zamora bared his administration's achievements in making his goal a reality.

"We were able to fulfill a major campaign promise which is to make San Juan a smart city, although not yet 100 percent, but we were able to provide 1 is to 1 tablets to all our public school students, something the previous administration said was impossible. They also have dedicated fiber-optic internet connection in their homes for online education. That's 7,000 households with modems for public school students," Zamora said.

"Grade 3-6 students of Pinaglabanan Elementary School have laptops because they are the pilot school for digital learning as chosen by the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT)," he added.
