PNP records 84 victims of poll-related violence

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has so far recorded 53 cases of election-related incidents across the country since the start of the election period on January 9.

Maj. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, director of the Directorate for Operations and concurrent commander of the PNP's national and local election task force, said the figure was based on the reports submitted by field units that are all consolidated at Camp Crame.

But of the 53 cases, de Leon said only 10 of them have been so far confirmed to be election-related.

"Based on our verification, a total of 29 incidents were non-election related and 14 others are still being verified," said de Leon.

Of the election-related incidents, there were a total of 84 victims composed of local candidates, uniformed personnel and incumbent local officials. Included in the list was the incident that happened in Pilar, Abra in March.

The official said part of their intervention even before is to push for covenant signing that also gives local candidates the opportunity to talk in front of police and Commission on Election officials.
