Dela Rosa believes self-confessed drug lord Espinosa could face perjury charges

Senator Ronald dela Rosa believes self-confessed drug Rolan ‘’Kerwin’’ Espinosa might face possible perjury charges for recanting his testimony before the Senate on his alleged involvement in the lucrative illegal drugs trade.

During a DWIZ radio interview, Dela Rosa said ‘’Puwede’’ (It is possible) that Espinosa was ‘’telling a lie’’ because he was free to say what he wanted to say during the public hearings of the Senate Public Order and Dangerous Drugs Committee between Nov. 23, 2016 and Dec. 5, 2016. The solon chairs the Committee.

The hearing focused on some details of the alleged drug trade and the death of Kerwin’s father, Albuera (Leyte) Mayor Roland Espinosa Sr., who was allegedly killed by the police while in jail.

Asked why Kerwin only recanted his testimonies as the May 2022 election approaches, Dela Rosa theorized that this might have political overtones.

Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Friday said he is considering the filing of perjury charges against Espinosa who recanted his testimonies on the alleged involvement of detained Senator Leila de Lima on alleged illegal drugs deals when she was the DOJ Secretary.

in his four-page counter-affidavit submitted to the DOJ, Espinosa said ‘’Any and all of my statements given during the Senate hearings, or in form of sworn written affidavits, against Senator de Lima are not true.’’

Dela Rosa asked aloud why Espinosa only walked back on his statements now after having been detained by government the past years.

It is obvious that politics plays a role or is the motive behind the Espinosa ’s recantation, he added.

Dela Rosa, likewise, said he has no information whether or not Espinosa is being threatened to make a 180-degree turn on his testimonies that were recorded by the Senate panel.
