Here’s the story behind Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu’s terno look

“I chose pink for what it symbolizes nowadays—hope and change,” the designer muses

Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu has been producing great style moments since she arrived in the country for the crowing of the new Miss Universe Philippines. One of the latest looks she recently wore was an ensemble by Filipino fashion designer Marc Rancy. Styled by Rain Dagala and Em Millan, the crowned beauty queen from India donned an elegant pink terno top matched with a white skirt

“Her stylist, Rain Dagala of Team RainxEm, wanted Harnaaz’s visit to Manila to be truly connected with the audience. A better way to do just that is by making the reigning Miss Universe wear one of our ternos,” the designer told Manila Bulletin Lifestyle. “I guess, I’m lucky to be chosen.”

According to Marc, the look is a custom-to-fit piece inspired by an arc, making a “silhouette that bridges different shapes yet are synchronous.” What stood out to many netizens is his choice of color.

“I chose pink for what it symbolizes nowadays—hope and change,” the designer muses. “With so many uncertainties on the horizon, pink, for me, is something that positively brings out the good in people, and that is the change we need.”

Marc’s design aesthetic has always leaned on a minimalist style, and his creation for Harnaaz truly demonstrates that. “I felt that she deserved to wear something low-key but in style, and that beautiful face should always be the focal point,” he says. “The dress is beautiful because she is beautiful, not the other way around. As a designer, that has always been my goal.”

This is not the first time a non-Filipino Miss Universe winner has donned an ensemble with butterfly sleeves. Prior to being crowned, Miss Universe 2020 Andrea Meza from Mexico wore a look inspired by the Philippine terno.

“When preparing my wardrobe for Mexicana Universal, I asked Roud & Rous to create a dress for me inspired the terno, a traditional Filipino dress,” Andrea posted. “The first time I saw a beauty queen wearing it, I thought those oversized sleeves looked very classy and elegant, and fell in love with them.”
