5.3-magnitude quake jolts Surigao del Norte


A strong earthquake with a magnitude measuring 5.3 jolted Surigao del Norte around 7:42 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the quake was recorded 80 kilometers (km) northwest of Santa Monica, Surigao del Norte and it is tectonic in origin.

The quake was “weak” at Intensity III in Surigao City.

Meanwhile, an instrumental intensity III was recorded in Surigao City; Intensity II in Abuyog and Hilingos, Leyte; Saint Bernard, southern Leyte; Cabadbaran City, and Agusan del Norte.

Instrumental intensity I was recorded in Dulag and Palo, Leyte; Sogod, southern Leyte; and Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

Phivolcs warned that aftershocks may occur due to this quake.
