PNP steps up drive vs telecom cable theft

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has intensified the crackdown on stealing of copper cable of telecommunication companies.

PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said that since last year, they have already arrested 68 individuals engaged in illegally cutting and stealing of copper wires owned by Glone Telecom.

“We are in constant coordination with the security team of the telco company. It’s also unfortunate that some of those apprehended were minors who might have been used to swiftly execute their modus,” said Carlos.

He said they further stepped up the campaign after Globle complained that its rehabilitation in areas affected by typhoon "Odette" in December last year was delayed due to the stealing of copper wires.

Carlos vowed that the PNP will not turn a blind eye into these incidents especially that they negatively affect the delivery of service to the public.

"We are also warning everyone who engages to this illicit activity that the claws of the law will come running after them," said Carlos.

"With this, the PNP asks the public to remain vigilant against this criminal act and report to authorities any irregularity happening in their area," he added.
