PH track and field team reaps 10 golds in Singapore meet


The Philippine track and field team reaped 10 golds, 13 silvers and six bronze medals in the 2022 Singapore Open held over the weekend.

Reigning Southeast Asian Games champions Natalie Uy, Sarah Dequinan and Melvin Calano spearheaded the winners after topping their respective events.

Uy dominated the women’s pole vault with 4.20 meters, Dequinan reigned supreme in women’s heptathlon with 5008 points, and Calano prevailed in men’s javelin with 66.23m.

Other gold medalists include Jessel Lumapas in the women’s 400m, Kat Santos in women’s long jump, Albert Mantua with a personal best in men’s shotput, Evelyn Palabrica in women’s javelin, Harry Diones in men’s triple jump, the men’s 4x400m relay and the women’s 4x400m relay teams.

Silver medalists were Mantua in the men’s discus throw, Dequinan in women’s javelin throw, Edwin Giron in men’s 800m, Frederick Ramirez in men’s 400m, Maureen Schrijvers in women’s 400m, Janry Ubas in men’s long jump and high jump, Alfrence Braza in men’s 5000m and 1500m, Alvin Vergel in men’s 110m hurdles, Melissa Escoton in women’s 100m hurdles, Rone Malipay in men’s triple jump, William Morrison in men’s shotput, and the women’s 4x100m relay team.

Bronze winners were Ubas in men’s 110m hurdles, Josefa Ligmayo in women’s heptathlon, Alrhyan Labita in men’s 400m, Eloiza Medina in women’s 100m and Francis Medina in men’s 400m hurdles.

The tournament is the first and last foreign exposure of the national team before they see action in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam next month.
