Eleazar: Cyberbullying, harassment vs Aika exposes gov't weakness to protect netizens

Harassments and bullying that emanated from rumors of a video of Aika Robredo, which turned out to be non-existent but is reportedly being used to attack her mother, Vice President and presidential candidate Leni Robredo, only exposes the government's weakness to protect netizens, particularly women, from cyberbullies and cybercriminals, senatorial candidate Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said on Wednesday, April 13.

Eleazar stressed that those who are behind the cyberbullying and sexual harassments must be held accountable in order to send a strong message the government is fully capable of running after those who would violate the law.

"The attack against Aika should have never happened to any woman in the first place. No woman deserves that kind of treatment," said Eleazar as he called on law enforcement agencies to take the initiative of exposing all those behind the smear campaign.

“More the issue of politics, it is really important that this is investigated because this only shows that anybody could be a victim of this kind of crime," he added.

This is the reason, according to Eleazar, why he has been pushing to further improve the investigative and operational capabilities of the Philippine National Police and other law enforcement agencies.

Eleazar, who also became a commander of the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group, has vowed to craft and push for legislations that provide modern trainings and equipment for all enforcers so that they would be at least one step ahead of criminals, especially those in the cyber world.

“I always maintain that best crime prevention is the certainty that those who will commit illegal activities will be caught," said Eleazar.
