Webinar series launched for teachers to improve numeracy, literacy teaching


To help teachers improve teaching literacy and numeracy, the Department of Education (DepEd) has launched a webinar series.

DepEd, through the Bureau of Learning and Delivery (BLD), has partnered with the US Embassy - Regional English Language Office (RELO), for the conduct of a webinar series on Integrated Language Learning in Early Childhood: Focus on Literacy and Numeracy.

“It is good to have partners who believe in the efforts of the Department to strengthen the capacity of teachers in improving their numeracy and literacy teaching skills," Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said.

"This event will surely equip them in developing the culture of reading and love for mathematics among our learners,” she added.

Spearheaded by BLD, the webinar series contains six modules for teachers and school heads that will run from March 21 to April 27, 2022. It has different schedules for participants according to their respective regions.

DepEd Undersecretary for Curriculum and Instruction Diosdado San Antonio explained that this course is designed to provide teachers and school heads with an overview of Content Integrated Language Learning, Early Literacy, and Bilingual Education.

"They can also learn specific strategies and tasks which can be implemented in the classroom and community to improve K-3 students’ literacy skills,” he said.

Throughout the webinar series, DepEd said that different topics on teaching literacy and numeracy will be tackled which including content and attitude goals in the classroom, developing literacy skills, and activities and assessment in teaching in English --- among others.

DepEd said that each session will run for two hours in a lecture-demo approach to include the question and answer and completion of activities.

A total of 3,000 participants all over the country are expected to attend.

DepEd said that the program aims to equip the teachers and school heads with necessary skills to apply innovative strategies and techniques to developmentally appropriate literacy lessons which will motivate K-3 students and develop their skills.

“Through this webinar, participants are also expected to contribute and support the school community and all stakeholders involved in the education of young learners,” San Antonio said.

DepEd said that the course also seeks to provide understanding of the underlying pedagogy of Content Integrated Language Learning, Early Literacy, and Bilingual Education for the development of K-3 literacy lessons.

Moreover, the DepEd also called on the selected teacher representatives from each grade level in grades K-3 to join the closed Facebook group dedicated to the training series.
