As Christians all over the world observe Palm Sunday on April 10, the president of the Council of the Laity of the Philippines (Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas) called on the faithful to include the May 9 elections in their reflections this Holy Week.

Brother Jun Cruz, president of the Council of the Laity said, in remembrance of the passion of Christ this Holy Week, the faithful must also remember to think of the common good in deciding whom to vote for in the May polls.

“Our reflections this Holy Week is very important as we commemorate the sacrifices of Christ for our salvation. Let us reflect on these sacrifices which were done for us, for our children, for our future,” Cruz said over Radio Veritas.

“Let us not only focus on our personal renewal this Holy Week but more so, for the renewal of our country. May our observance of Easter this year be made more meaningful and relevant as we prepare for the coming elections with renewed hope,” he added.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis invited the faithful to focus their gaze on Christ this Holy Week and to ask for guidance and inspiration to better understand the mystery His passion, death, and resurrection.

Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion is considered the world over as a Sunday of the highest rank in commemoration of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem astride a donkey, where a huge jubilant crowd, waving palm fronds and crying “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” welcomed the Son of God (Matthew 21:1-9).

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, “The branches of palms signify victory over death and the advent of spiritual victory through Christ. The death and resurrection of Christ bring us closer to eternal life as man becomes one with God and God becomes one with man.”
