DOST opens science museum in Leyte

An interactive science museum was opened in Palo, Leyte with the hope of paving the way for the town to be known as a "science municipality."

The science centrum, located at the Leyte Academic Center, opened last 24 March 2022 with DOST Sec. Fortunato T. de la Peña in attendance. Also present were Leyte Gov. Located at the Leyte Academic Center, the museum is a joint project of the provincial government and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

DOST Secretary Fortunato "Boy" de la Pena said the establishment of the science centrum will not only benefit children but even adults to address the need to increase the level of science literacy in the country.

“Having a science centrum here is a good way to introduce children to science and this allows them to have interaction,” he said, adding that the facility in Leyte is the fifth science centrum in the country.

The secretary said that the facility will also lead to making the municipality, not only a science town but, also a tourist destination with an additional attraction.

Featured at the science centrum are “gravity well”, “feel the shake”, “head on a platter”, “pendulum wave”, “pedal power”, trash timeline, plasmasphere, magic faucet, zoetrope, hazer harp, moving faces, among others.

Science books that students can read are also on display to maximize their exposure to various fields of science.
