Improved connectivity eyed under digital infrastructure program

Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Acting Secretary Emmanuel "Manny" Caintic said Wednesday, March 30, that the Digital Infrastructure Program aims to connect areas with little or no access to the Internet.

"While we have come a long way in terms of Internet speeds during this administration, a lot more remains to be done to achieve nationwide connectivity," Caintic said.

"Digital infrastructure is the only way to go if we want to improve the Internet connectivity in our country. There are still a lot of underserved and unserved areas. Digital infrastructure investment can change that," he added.

According to Statista.com, there are 89.66 million Internet users in the Philippines as of February 2022.

Caintic said the National Digital Infrastructure is the equivalent of President Rodrigo Duterte's Build, Build, Build program as it seeks to provide quality, affordable, and extensive connectivity for the public.

He explained that the program focuses on helping telecommunication companies in their investment and infrastructure which can lower service costs for the consumers.

“I am sure that all of the candidates are in unison. They are all aware of this program and if they see the effectiveness and impacts of this program, they will see this through. Together, we shall connect and enable more Filipinos to participate in the global digital economy,” Caintic ended.
