The Early Registration is an annual activity of DepEd to urge parents and guardians of incoming Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners ahead of the school year.

However, due to the threat of Covid-19, the Early Registration for select grade levels was conducted remotely in the past school years.

For the incoming school year (SY) 2022-2023, DepEd has allowed in-person registration in schools located in low-risk areas.

“In-person registration through parents and guardians may be allowed in areas under Alert Levels 1 - 2 provided physical distancing and health safety protocols are strictly observed,” said DepEd in a memorandum signed by Education Secretary Leonor Briones.

However, DepEd maintained that the conduct of early registration in areas under Alert Levels 3 to 5 should be “done remotely” in the context of the ongoing Covid-19 situation in the country.

In preparation for the incoming class opening this SY 2022-2023, DepEd started to conduct the early registration in public elementary and secondary schools on March 25.

Set to end on April 30, DepEd said that ongoing Early Registration will help schools to prepare the necessary resources to accommodate the incoming learners for Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners in all public elementary and secondary schools.

These learners, DepEd explained, need to pre-register to allow the department “to make necessary preparations and adjustment of plans for the incoming school year.”

On the other hand, DepEd said that learners in Grades 2 to 6, 8 to 10, and 12 do not need to participate in the early registration since they are already “pre-registered.”

The conduct of Early Registration, DepEd said, is mandatory for public schools.

However, private schools may also conduct their respective early registration activities, preferably in line with DepEd’s schedule.

DepEd has yet to announce the date for the start of SY 2022-2023.

In SY 2020-2021, DepEd moved the school opening from June to Oct. 5. Under its Basic Education - Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP), DepEd adopted a distance learning setup for all students in basic education due to the public health situation brought about by Covid-19. The school year ended on July 10, 2021.

Still under a distance learning setup, DepEd opened SY 2021-2022 on Sept. 13, 2021. Set to end on June 24, 2022, DepEd said more than 27.2 million students enrolled in public and private schools this SY.
