To help them cope with changes, Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones reminded education stakeholders to give importance to Education Futures.

“The future cannot wait for us,” Briones said during her visit to Benguet National High School (BNHS) this week.

Briones also underscored the need for Filipino learners to be prepared for the future. “When our children graduate, everything that we have taught them will become irrelevant because knowledge will have changes,” she said.

“Our teachers have to change along without learners, and they will not be only teaching, but they will also be learning along with the students,” she added.

Given this, Briones highlighted the urgent need for Filipino learners to adapt to changes. “We have to prepare our learners for the future,” she said.

“We are already late but we should not be late for the future,” she added.

While DepEd is pushing for Education Futures, defined as a globally-focused education thought leadership and research network to create new opportunities for human development, Briones said that “we should never forget our history, what we are as a people, and how we look.”

In 2021, DepEd established the Education Futures Unit to strategically evaluate and integrate trends and advancements in learning and teaching processes.

The goal of the unit is to also help the youth gain skills that are relevant in the future.

Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary Juan Valeriano Respicio IV, recently appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Youth Affairs and Special Concerns of the department, noted that it is important to believe in the capabilities of the youth.

“She truly believes in the wisdom, in the strength, in the knowledge, and in the capacities of our young learners and the capacities of the youth,” Respicio said.

As part of the Welcome Program of the DepEd – Cordillera Administrative Region to the members of the Executive and Management Committee, Briones also met with officials of the Schools Division of Benguet during her visit.
