Free film screenings online for your weekend binge-watching

Weekend binge at home? That is still a thing

As Metro Manila is now under much-relaxed Covid-19 restrictions, many of our activities are slowly becoming how they were during our pre-pandemic times. Among those is our cinema experience. After their opening last November under strict guidelines, many movie houses now allow food inside the theaters, making the film viewing more fun for family and friends. But if you are still loving your movie experience at home, many films are still showing online. Looking for something new to watch this weekend? Then check out this list of independent and documentary films streaming online for free.

‘Liway’

Dakip "Kip" Oebanda’s 2018 independent film “Liway” is now playing on YouTube for free. First showcased at the 14th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, the film is set during Marcos’ dictatorship, presenting life through the director’s point of view as “a boy living in a prison camp housing both criminals and members of the New People's Army” with his mom Ma. Cecilia Flores-Oebanda, better known as Commander Liway.

‘Dokyu Power’

Running until April 9, Dokyu Power brings Filipino stories to the screen. Organized by FilDocs with DAKILA and Active Vista, supported by Purin Pictures, MOOV by Cinema Centenario, and Rappler Move.PH, the festival aims to “celebrate the power of the documentary: to reveal the truths of our past and present, and to shape the narrative of our nation's future.” Among the films in the festival’s roster are Lauren Greenfield's “The Kingmaker,” Alyx Ayn Arumpac’s “Aswang,” and Rafael Manuel’s short “Filipiñana.
