The Council of the Laity of Calapan backed the decision of the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas to support presidential candidate Leni Robredo in the May 2022 polls.
The council said they arrived at the decision after much discussion, prayer and discernment.
"After a thorough discussion, prayers, and discernment of the lay people from 40 parishes, chaplaincy, and mission areas, we have reached a decision to support the endorsement of the Council of the Laity of the Philippines," Council of the Laity of Calapan President Alquin Rayos said in a statement.
"We acknowledge and endorse the statement of support of the Council of the Laity of the Philippines to the tandem of Leni Robredo and Kiko Pangilinan," he added.
"This is the fruit of our firm belief that they are the ones that can lift us from our present situation and recover our dignity as a free country," said Rayos.
The council, however, said that they will continue to respect the personal freedom and right of each individual to choose in the coming elections.
Last month, the Sangguniang Laiko ng Pilipinas (LAIKO) expressed their support for Robredo.
"With our current political-economic turmoil and the pandemic situation in the Philippines, we firmly believe that Vice President Leni Robredo, a God-fearing person, is the most capable candidate for the Presidency, and we urge our constituents, if possible, to consider the same," said LAIKO President Raymond Dakiel Cruz Jr. in a statement.
"Hence, we explicitly endorse Vice President Leni Robredo to the highest position of our land," he added.
