‘I Am Legend’ sequel is now in the works

Will Smith is set to return and Michael B. Jordan is tagging along

The next chapter for the 2007 post-apocalyptic movie “I Am Legend” is now in development. Confirming this news is its star Will Smith through an Instagram post, where he tagged fellow actor Michael B. Jordan.

News about the film sequel has been around since 2012. According to Deadline, both Smith and Jordan will be starring and producing the upcoming film. The plot and other details about it are yet to be released.

Based on Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel of the same name, “I Am Legend” was adapted to film by Oscar-winning writer Akiva Goldsman with Francis Lawrence as the director under Warner Bros. Pictures. Its plot centers on Robert Neville, a former U.S. Army virologist, in a deserted Manhattan trying to find a cure to a genetically re-engineered measles virus that turned people into vampire-like mutants called Darkseekers.

In 2021, “I Am Legend” made headlines again due to people’s vaccine hesitancy. A story by The New York Times said that one employee was not keen on getting her vaccine shots as it “had caused the characters in the film ‘I Am Legend’ to turn into zombies.” Through a tweet, Goldsman responded saying, “Oh. My. God. It's a movie. I made that up. It's. Not. Real.”

To help clear up the confusion, Reuters released a fact check piece noting that “a vaccine did not turn characters in the movie ‘I Am Legend’ into zombies.”
