Filipino fishermen shouldn't be left behind by the private sector as far as senatorial candidate Gilbert "Gibo" Teodoro is concerned.

Teodoro on Wednesday, March 2 encouraged the private sector to partner up with local fishermen and include them in their value chain in order to increase their income and livelihood opportunities.

"The private sector can create a significant impact in the lives of our fisherfolk because by partnering with them and including them in their value chain, they promote trade, better market access, and higher income for our fishermen," said the former Department of National Defense (DND) secretary.

Teodoro, who has vast experience in both the public and private sectors in various industries, urged fishermen to organize themselves into cooperatives so that they'll have the economies of scale necessary to link up with bigger enterprises.

On the part of the government, the former Tarlac congressman added that it should continue promoting inclusive business models by providing incentives to companies that engage with farmers and fisherfolk and include them in their value chain.

It should also promote investments in cold storage facilities to minimize or avoid food spoilage.

" surrounded by vast waters, fisheries and aquaculture play a major role in food security and sustainability. That is part of my advocacy,” Teodoro said.

“Partnering with our local fisherfolk, who are among the poorest sectors in the country, will help in poverty alleviation," he added.
