Magnitude 4.0 quake hits Ilocos Norte – Phivolcs


An earthquake with a magnitude measuring 4.0 hit Ilocos Norte around 8:16 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the quake was traced 20 kilometers (km) northeast of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte. It was tectonic in origin and according to Phivolcs, tectonic earthquakes are produced by sudden movement along faults and plate boundaries.

Meanwhile, an instrumental Intensity III was recorded in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; intensity II was recorded in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, and instrumental Intensity I was traced in Sinait and Vigan City, Ilocos Sur and Peñablanca, Cagayan.

No aftershocks and damage are expected after this quake, said Phivolcs.
