DOTr, UK forge ties to strengthen PH rail, maritime sectors


The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has tapped partners from the United Kingdom (UK) to improve the skills of its railways and maritime personnel through continuous education and training programs.

DOTr Sec. Arthur Tugade said the partnership between the Philippine Railway Institute (PRI) and the he UK-National Skills Academy for Rail (NSAR) aims to develop a highly-skilled, competent, and world-class rail workforce.

On the other hand, the agreement between the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) and the Solent University of the United Kingdom will focus on Maritime Education and Training (MET) programs.

“Education and skills training is important for the continuity of growth in the transportation sector in the Philippines Why education? Because we want to have a continuity,” said Tugade.

Tugade, who led the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), said the agreement formalizes the cooperation and collaboration between the two countries in line with the education and training of individuals in the rail and maritime sectors.

“You are giving us the seeds so that the growth we like to achieve in the maritime sector and the development we like to achieve in the railway sector can continue, continue, and continue steadily so that the Philippines can grow,” Tugade said during the ceremony.
