This bridal collection is for brides who want to look extra

Fashion designer Jaggy Glarino presents his 'L’emancipation' bridal collection

Love, while it is intangible, is something the best thing to witness. It is depicted through many physical and special moments. There are the intimate touching of the hands, the cheeks that became rosy due to kilig, and a shared kiss between couples or loved ones. In clothing, there are many ways one can present love, but nothing beats the romance that comes from a wedding dress—it is the ultimate look of love.

When you think of wedding dresses, classic and personal are always the key elements to consider. This time, a Filipino designer takes the iconic white dress to a new fashion level. Ternocon 2020 silver champion Jaggy Glarino presents new looks for brides by giving traditional styles a modern and timeless spin with his hallmark avant-garde aesthetic through his first bridal capsule collection dubbed “L’emancipation (The Emancipation).”

Though this wasn’t his first time to craft a wedding frock, it took years and COVID-19 for him to fully commit to the challenge of producing a bridal collection. For him, making this all-white collection has been a liberating process amid the gloom of the pandemic. This enabled him to produce romantic and imaginative silhouettes that will make it hard for today’s brides not to say “I do” to his creations.

“It was a very intuitive process building the collection. I’ve put great thought into how I’d be able to share the idea of ‘freedom’ into bridal-worthy frocks that women would aspire to wear on their wedding day. Somehow this felt like my love letter to all my future bridal clients,” Jaggy says.

Textiles are an important part of a designer’s creative process. In his case, the materials he used for the collection have been with him for years and he let them be his muses. The result is a jump from conventional with no beading or crystal insight, with the spotlight on his master tailoring and fabric manipulation, leaving no space for displaced seams or unkempt finishing.

“We have set our hearts in creating a bridal label that is forward-thinking. We sincerely would like to commit to the idea of creating a brand that encourages diversity and inclusivity,” Jaggy says. “We aspire to cater to a broad bridal market, be it the traditionalists or the subversive.”

“From the get-go, we knew that this collection was really meant to be a proposition of some sort, a different way of approaching the classic; perhaps, a respectful yet fresher way of doing wedding dresses,” he continues. “This collection says a lot about our desire to offer new and irreverent alternatives as we rise to the challenge of reinventing the traditional wheel of bridal fashion.”

Take for example his Frida and Audrey dresses, a celebration of a classic form that’s elevated to with delicate straps and a crumpled taffeta silk bow as an accent. Playing yet elegant is the Lily mini dress with its layers of pleated organza and the Kaiah tea-length dress with its cascading blooms. The Andra deconstructed suit and corset ensemble is for the bold and edgy type while the Deisy is a ball gown straight out of a fairy tale.

“This is our response to the clamor of the 'niche' clientele who conceive themselves in a timeless and elegant dress without having to give up on their individuality,” he muses. “We surely do not love the idea of brides looking like a rehashed version of the bride in the next ballroom. We believe that every bride is charming and unique in their own way, and as their collaborator, we are here to encourage them to embrace these unique qualities and enhance their special facets on their wedding day.”

“This is exactly the reason why the collection is called ‘L’emancipation.’ It is somewhat like we are giving women the consent to experiment and be themselves during the process,” Jaggy adds. “I am the kind of a bridal designer who likes to shake things up and I feel like this is the most freeing and bridal-worthy way there is that I could offer my future bridal clients.”
