TACLOBAN CITY — Samar Governor Reynolds Michael Tan calls for justice in the killing of a Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) official in an ambush in Calbayog City, Tuesday (Feb. 8).
The police identified the fatality as Gerald Casaljay, 25, a resident, and SK Kagawad of P6 Brgy. Migara, Calbayog City.
"It is heartbreaking to learn that one of our own and whose future was bright was cut short by a senseless act of violence. I am gravely concerned by and strongly condemn, the killing of our Sirak Kabataan and SK Member in Calbayog City," Tan said.
He added that Casaljay's death sends a chilling effect among the youth that even they, are not spared from the violence perpetrated by people whose aim is to sow fear and intimidate the youth and their people into submission.
"I urge our Philippine National Police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation and find the culprit to this cowardly act. I strongly urge our communities to be vigilant and reject violence," he added.
Casaljay's fellow youth group member and companion, Brandel Yrigon was able to escape, however, his condition is yet to be known as of this writing.
Reports disclosed that Casaljay and Yrigon were on their way home on board a motorcycle from Brgy. Osmeña, some 25 kilometers away from the city, after attending the village' vesper night celebration.
When they reached the neighboring village of Migara, a lone suspect allegedly appeared and fired at the victims hitting Casaljay twice.
Casaljay was hit on his right cheek and lower chest causing his instantaneous death.
