Ever wonder why the heart became the ultimate symbol of love? We’ve seen many depictions of it—immortalized through painting, inspired numerous love songs, and the list goes on. But where did it start?

In a story by History, the use of the heart shape as the insignia for love may have started in the Middle Ages through artists and scientists with works presenting how the “human heart has long been associated with emotion and pleasure” that it was “eventually co-opted as a symbol of romance and medieval courtly love.” While historian Marilyn Yalom reports through Ideas.ted that the heart as the image of love can be dated back to ancient Greece with “lyric poetry identified the heart with love in verbal conceits.” What remains the same is the view of the heart, the body organ, being associated with our emotions, including love.
