PDP-Laban still undecided on presidential bet

PDP-Laban, the ruling party, is still deciding on who to support for president in the 2022 elections, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said.

President Rodrigo Duterte attends the National Assembly of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino - Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) in Clark, Pampanga on July 17, 2021. Energy Secretary Alfonsi Cusi, seated next to the President, is elected new party president. (Malacañang)

Nograles made the statement as the party remained without a presidential candidate for the upcoming polls following the withdrawal from the race of Senator Ronald dela Rosa and President Duterte's long-time aide Senator Christopher 'Bong' Go.

In an interview with ANC's "Headstart" on Wednesday morning, February 2, Nograles said it is still in the process of "consensus-building" among members of PDP-Laban.

Nograles serves as the executive vice president of the party's faction led by Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi.

"Dumadaan pa ng proseso ng PDP-Laban. We're still trying to seek consensus sa loob ng PDP-Laban (It's undergoing a process. We're still trying to seek a consensus inside the party)," he said.

"Dumadaan pa kasi ng proseso 'yan (It's undergoing a process) not just from the executive committee, but also with the other officials, especially on the ground, regions," he added.

The acting Palace spokesman added that the process involves discussions with the political parties of the other presidential candidates.

"Yung bawa't kandidato na tumatakbo bilang pangulo ay may kanya-kanyang partido (All candidates running for president has their own parties)," he said.

"It's really a discussion not only with the personality himself but also with the party. Party-to-party discussions din po 'yan," he added.

Meanwhile, he denied that PDP-Laban has already chosen Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso as its presidential candidate after posters of the former actor and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio are spotted in several areas in the country.

"Hindi po. Hindi po. No. Hindi po (No, they're not)," he answered when he was asked if the said posters were from PDP-Laban.

The Cusi faction of PDP-Laban has already adopted Duterte-Carpio as its vice-presidential candidate but has not settled yet for Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for president.

President Duterte himself expressed that he was not keen on supporting Marcos Jr., citing the latter's supposed weak leadership skills.
