The San Juan City local government announced that its active COVID-19 cases continue to drop amid the surge in COVID-19 infections in the country caused by the more transmissible Omicron and Delta variants.
In an interview with ANC, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said the city's active COVID-19 cases dropped to 536 as of Jan. 26, a 72.47 percent drop from the record high 1,947 cases recorded on Jan. 12.
Zamora noted that the rapid decline occurred in just two weeks.
Asked about his opinion if Metro Manila can now be downgraded to a more relaxed quarantine classification following the decline in active cases, he replied: "Is it time for Alert Level 3? I'd say that I would want to see the numbers go down even lower, and this is something that I foresee will happen in the next few days."
"Given the data we are seeing now, the numbers are really going down, even our hospitalization rate, even our quarantine facilities are just down to 30 percent utilization. All the data point to a sharp decline in active cases," he added.
The local government unit (LGU) also reported 19,629 recoveries and 349 deaths as of Jan. 26.
Zamora also said that the LGU is fully prepared for the upcoming COVID-19 vaccination of minors aged 5-11 years old on Feb. 4.
The LGU opened the registration for the vaccination of the said age group on Jan. 2 after the country experienced a new surge in COVID-19 infections.
“They have already rolled out the vaccination in other countries and we are hopeful that the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) and DOH (Department of Health) will soon come up with its protocols, and by the time that they give the go signal, we want to be ready to roll out our vaccination right away,” Zamora said during the launch.
“We are being proactive to protect the children especially since they are allowed to go out in public and face-to-face classes are slowly being implemented,” he added.
