US firm to install ‘green fuel cell solutions’ at Globe’s rooftop sites

Boston-based Advent Technologies Holdings Inc. will be providing greener and energy-efficient solutions for the rooftop cell site-installations of Globe Telecom via the deployment of fuel cell and hydrogen technologies.

In a statement to the media, the US company indicated that it is “currently upgrading Globe’s rooftop sites in the Philippines with 10-kilowatt SereneU fuel cell systems,” and this technology will enable the Ayala-led telecommunications company “to reach its ambitious targets for reduced CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions.”

Advent explained that with the deployment of its SereneU fuel cells, Globe would be able to pare carbon emissions across its network, and it will likewise “consume cleaner fuel in smaller quantities, achieve lower emissions and maintain energy-efficient heat removal.”

According to Morten Hougaard Sørensen, senior vice president of Advent Technologies A/S, their company has already been working with Globe “since the beginning of their transition to greener operations.” This is being done by incorporating the use of fuel cells in their cell sites for both rural and urban areas, as well as their ongoing upgrades for 5G networks, said Sorensen.

It was noted that the SereneU fuel cells of Advent, “produce fewer emissions than traditional generator-sets.” Since it also operates silently, it will have very low footprint to surrounding areas and people.

“Advent’s SereneU systems have higher temperature and environmental conditions tolerance, ensuring uninterrupted back-up power and stronger resilience against natural calamities – such as typhoons, monsoon rains and even long dry seasons,” the American firm expounded.

Depending on the fuel cells to be installed, it was emphasized that “the systems can become close to CO2 neutral, as well as become easier to store and transport.”

Of the various conglomerates in the country, Ayala group is one of those with clear plans for mid-century net zero goal when it comes to balancing the carbon footprints of its business operations across industries.

For its part, Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said Globe continues to innovate and collaborate with partners to integrate sustainability and champion energy efficiency throughout the entire organization.

“Our partnership with Advent in implementing renewable energy solutions has led us to achieve great things in our sustainability journey,” with him emphasizing that “through our continued efforts, we will further shift Globe’s energy reliance towards renewable sources and decarbonized operations,” Cu said.

By using fuel cells in its green transition, Cu said Globe "complies not only with regulations and its own ambitions for best environmental practices, but also secures several competitive advantages.”

Advent Chairman and CEO Vasilis Gregoriou similarly conveyed that “we see Globe as a highly committed partner – not only to the mission of transitioning to green technologies, but also in establishing their independent organizational know-how and technical expertise to lead projects, install and operate fuel cells.”

Globe specified that its initiatives in the green transition is a manifestation of its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), “which is about achieving economic growth and sustainable development by urgently reducing ecological footprint,” as well as pursuing efforts toward “decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, increasing resource efficiency and promoting sustainable lifestyles by changing the way people produce and consume goods and resources.”
