PNP elated by CHR's recognition of handling of viral case of Nardo Flores

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) lauded the Philippine National Police (PNP) for its proper handling of the case of an octagenarian in Pangasinan whose story went viral after he was jailed for allegedly stealing 10 kilos of mangoes of his neighbor in Asingan town.

PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said that the policemen, especially the local police force, are just doing their job that includes ensuring that the welfare of Nardo Flores was prioritized being a senior citizen.

“The PNP thanks the CHR for seeing the bigger picture. I hope that this will ultimately correct the notion that our personnel was heartless in arresting the suspect. To reiterate, there was an arrest warrant issued by the court," said Carlos.

"They had to serve the warrant, but upon knowing the age and condition of Mr. Flores, the Asingan police just placed him under custody and did not physically detain him,” he added.

CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia earlier made the pronouncement recognizing the efforts of the police personnel for upholding the rights of accused Flores.

It also came to the attention of the public that the police personnel in Asingan chipped in to raise enough amount for the P6,000 bail of the suspect.

As to the suggestion of the CHR to explore the amicable settlement of the case, Carlos said that is beyond PNP’s call.

“The theft case has been filed and arraignment is set this February. Should the parties involved opt to look for alternative means, the PNP will leave that to the court’s decision,” Carlos said.
