Students who are not sick and well enough should do some self-study during the break, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

Classes in Metro Manila and other areas have been suspended due to the clamor of various groups amid the surge in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) nationwide.

Since the distance learning setup remains the default learning delivery modality in basic education this school year, Education Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio said that students in areas where classes have been declared suspended can still do self-study as long as they are not sick.

Due to the pandemic, DepEd has been implementing the Basic Education Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) since School Year (SY) 2020 -2021. To ensure the safety of students and teachers, schools were closed and face-to-face classes were prohibited.

To help ensure learning continuity amid the pandemic, DepEd has been implementing multiple learning delivery modalities for students in basic education.

While they stay at home, students continue to learn their lessons through printed or offline Self-Learning Modules (SLMs); online classes; radio and television-based instructions, and a combination of these modalities under blended learning.

“Learners who are healthy may proceed with their study of the SLMs accessible to them,” San Antonio told the Manila Bulletin when asked what are the activities DepEd recommended by DepEd for students during the break.

In a public briefing last week, DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said that students who are not sick can review their lessons even classes have been suspended.

“They can do their self-study in those places,” he said. “They can also get in touch with their teachers if they are ready to continue learning despite the suspension,” he added.

Malaluan stressed despite the suspension of classes in some areas, learning continuity remains the overall framework of DepEd.

“In areas where the suspension has been done, it is because there are health or other compelling bases why classes were suspended and that’s exactly the reason why we did not declare a nationwide suspension ,” he said.

The suspension of classes, he added, should be “need-based” and should take into consideration the “overall framework learning continuity even in this time of the pandemic,” he added.
