Correct lagundi dosage seen to relieve COVID-19 symptoms -- DOST

The project leader of the lagundi clinical trial conducted by the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) and the Department of Science and Technology Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), reminded the public to follow the prescribed dosage of the medicinal plant.

Citing the recommendations of Dr. Cecilia Maramba-Lazarte, DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña said the correct dosage of lagundi may relieve mild COVID-19 symptoms, especially the loss of sense of smell for patients.

"By following the guidelines, the use of the medicine may alleviate mild COVID-19 symptoms," de la Peña said in a taped report.

De la Peña said adult patients may take the 600 milligrams (mg) tablet or five milliliters (mL) of the 600mg syrup thrice daily.

Meanwhile, the dosage requirement for pediatric patients would vary depending on their age range.

The 300mg syrup may be taken thrice daily by children, following the suggested dosage per intake: 2.5 to 5mL for ages two to four; 5mL for aged four to six; and 7.5 to 10mL for ages six to 12.

Teens aged 12 and older may also take the 600mg table thrice daily.

The lagundi product, formulated under the National Integrated Research Program in Medicinal Plant, has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration and has been used for cough and asthma relief.

Lagundi is also included in the home care kit for mild COVID-19 patients of the Philippines Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth).
