DSWD: Over 196K 'Odette’ victims remain in evacuation centers


More than 196,000 individuals or over 50,700 families affected by typhoon Odette remained in evacuation centers, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has disclosed.

The DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) said as of Jan. 8, 6 p.m., 50,757 evacuee-families have been logged. This translates to 196,434 individuals who were taking temporary shelter in 1,108 evacuation centers following the onslaught of “Odette” in 10 regions.

Meanwhile, 12,838 families or 43,925 individuals have opted to stay with their relatives and/or friends.

The DROMIC reported that “Odette” had affected 2,200,896 families or 7,704,571 individuals from 8,487 barangays.

The 10 affected regions were Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan), Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Northern Mindanao, Davao, Soccsksargen (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani, General Santos), and Caraga.

Based on the DROMIC report, 1,230,901 houses were damaged. Of these, 891,626 were partially damaged and 339,275 were totally damaged. More than P517.13-million worth of humanitarian assistance has been extended to the areas affected by typhoon Odette.

The assistance given to the affected families totals P517,135.597.36.

The aid was provided by the DSWD, local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs) and other partners.
