A total of 990 active coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were recorded in Manila as of Tuesday, Jan. 4.
Majority of infections are concentrated in two of the 16 Manila districts: Tondo with 464 active cases and Sampaloc with 121.
The COVID-19 surge was also felt among medical frontliners as around 50 Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center (GABMMC) staff members tested positive for the disease.
As a result of the rapid increase in cases, Manila district hospitals GABMMC and the Justice Jose Abad Santos General Hospital (JJASGH) temporarily closed as they could no longer admit patients due to disinfection and staff members undergoing isolation.
However, JJASGH re-opened on Monday, Jan. 3, after asymptomatic COVID-19 patients were relocated to other Manila quarantine facilities.
The 344-bed Manila COVID-19 Field Hospital in Ermita, Manila is also nearing full capacity with 338 patients (98%) undergoing treatment.
