CEBU CITY — Tragedy struck on New Year in Tagbilaran City, Bohol when a fire claimed the lives of two children.
The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Tagbilaran said the fire was caused by a generator set that the family used due to the continuing power outage that the area is experiencing as a result of the damage caused by Typhoon Odette.
“Having a generator set these days is very essential. We appeal to the public to take extra care when using it as it will cause fire when used improperly,” the agency said.
“We are aware that generators are run by gasoline/diesel. These materials are extremely dangerous when exposed to open flame such as igniting a lighter, lighting a candle or turning on a gas stove burner,” the agency said.
The tragic incident happened in Cortes town, Tagbiliran.
The family reportedly used a generator set that was placed inside the house.
According to BFP-Tagbilaran, someone allegedly lit a candle inside the house that caused the genset to catch fire.
“That’s why we are asking the public that before buying a generator set, they should have themselves oriented by authorized seller on the fire safety that we have to observe,” BFP-Tagbilaran said.
