School Year 2021-2022 welcomes pioneering batch of NAS student-athlete scholars

The pioneering batch of student-athlete scholars under the National Academy of Sports (NAS) were among the millions of students who welcomed the School Year 2021-2022 (SY) last week.

NAS, the newest attached institution of the Department of Education (DepEd), also started classes when the new school year formally opened in public schools on Sept. 13.

“We truly believe that the sports academy will serve as a platform to create academically competent and disciplined Filipino youth, then eventually become responsible world-class student-athlete playing a vital role in nation-building,” Education Secretary and Chair of the NAS Board of Trustees Leonor Briones said in a statement issued Wednesday, Sept. 22.

Assistant Secretary for NAS and Field Operations Malcolm Garma said that they decided to open the school year on Sept. 13 to show people that even if the school that focuses on the field of sports, it is ready to provide education to students.

Meanwhile, NAS Executive Director Josephine Joy Reyes also shared the latest developments of the newly attached agency in preparation for its first academic year.

In particular, NAS held a parent-student orientation which was a “very successful” one. “We have met our 65 scholars, along with their parents this year, and we gave them an adaptive and meaningful orientation,” she added.

Reyes added that in the first few weeks of school opening, NAS will be conducting a series of orientations that will be given to students and that will also be represented by other divisions.

“So bibigyan natin sila ng sapat na oryentasyon sa sports science, sa aming support services, and even sa academics (So we will give them enough orientation in sports science, in our support services, and even in academics,” Reyes said.

The core divisions of NAS - namely sports science, support services, and academics - will serve as the basis for forming the appropriate programs of the sports institution.

NAS Deputy Executive Director Emil Arroyo also explained that NAS is still opening the doors to the remaining 13 learners to complete their enrolment as there are currently 52 learners enrolled out of the 65 who qualified for the scholarship.

Arroyo also shared the mode of learning that will be guided by the eight teachers tapped from different schools of DepEd Region 3.

“The modality for learning this school year will primarily be online remote learning, but this will be supplemented with digitized modules, and we will be conducting both synchronous and asynchronous classes, as well as sports training for our pioneering batch,” Arroyo said in a mix of English and Filipino.

Reyes also emphasized that toolkits and adequate materials will be provided to the learners to guide their daily learnings and activities as everything from the mode of instruction up to the training will be conducted online.
