Massive DDoS attack targets Belgian government network

The Belgian National Research and Education network (Belnet), a government-funded Internet Service Provider in Belgium, has suffered a massive distributed denial of service attack (DDoS) on Tuesday, May 4.

DDoS is an attack to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service or network by overwhelming the target or its surrounding infrastructure with a flood of Internet traffic. In short, it prevents anyone from visiting the website.

The incident is believed to have impacted the activities of more than 200 Belgian government organizations.

“Due to a DDoS-attack some Belnet customers are experiencing connectivity problems. Our teams are working hard to mitigate the attacks and to restore connectivity,” said by a representative from Belnet.

Belgian authorities are working to determine who is behind the cyber attack.
