A three-dimensional (3D) monument of Dr. Jose Rizal was unveiled by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) on Thursday in Taguig City as the country marked the 125th anniversary of his martyrdom.

The DOST said that this is "the first and largest 3D-printed monument" of Rizal—which stands 12.5 feet tall. The statue, dubbed as “Dr. Jose P. Rizal, The Filipino Scientist,” was unveiled at the DOST Science Complex in Taguig City on Thursday, Dec. 30.

The agency said that it is “a product of the state-of-the-art Advanced Manufacturing Center of the DOST-Metals Industry Research and Development Center (DOST-MIRDC) using Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA), a material known for its high mechanical properties that can withstand impact and high temperature, UV, and has chemical resistant quality.”

“Dito sa bagong monument, ipapakita ang gilas at accomplishments ni Dr. Rizal bilang (This new monument represents the skills and accomplishments of Dr. Rizal as an) ophthalmologist, engineer, scientist, naturalist, and environmentalist,” said DOST Undersecretary Dr. Rowena Guevarra in a public briefing.

“Maraming naging accomplishment si Dr. Rizal sa larangan ng Agham at nais ng DOST na maalala ito ng susunod na henerasyon (Dr. Rizal had many accomplishments in the field of Science and DOST wants the next generation to remember it),” she added.

DOST Secretary Fortunato Dela Pena said that the national hero “did not do science for his own sake and recognition, he did it for the sake of others. He did Science for the people.”
