Las Pinas gov’t bans use of firecrackers during New Year celebration

The Las Pinas City government announced Tuesday that the use of all kinds of firecrackers during the celebration of New Year is prohibited.

Mayor Imelda Aguilar said the city government has been implementing the city ordinance prohibiting the manufacture, display, sale, distribution, possession or use of firecrackers, pyrotechnic devices and other similar devices since 2017.

Aguilar said under the said ordinance, the City Health Office shall intensify the conduct of information campaigns about the danger of firecrackers and pyrotechnics devices to life, limb, property and environment.

She said barangay personnel must also conduct regular patrolling to monitor compliance to the ordinance, and report violations to the Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO).

The mayor also told the BPLO to dispatch personnel in the area to confiscate all firecrackers and pyrotechnics being displayed, sold and distributed within the city.

Aguilar said community fireworks displays may be granted provided the organizers secure a permit to possess and display fireworks from the local police and the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP).

She also said the fireworks displays shall be conducted in an open area at a distance of 100 feet away from the people, and all fireworks shall be projected upward.

The mayor added that a responsible person or persons at least 21 years old and with adequate knowledge of handling fireworks shall be assigned to supervise the fireworks display, sufficient approved type of first aid and fire protection equipment shall be on hand at the site, and the nearest fire station shall be notified of the exhibition.
