Mandaluyong LGU, Chairman Abalos distribute aid to fire victims


The Mandaluyong City local government, together with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Benhur Abalos, distributed grocery packs and other assistance to victims of the fire that hit Barangay Old Zañiga on Christmas Eve.

On its official Facebook page, the local government unit (LGU) posted photos of the distribution held on Monday, facilitated by Chairman Abalos and the office of his wife, Mandaluyong City Mayor Menchie Abalos.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the fire started at 4:55 p.m., and was declared fire out at 8:41 p.m.

The owner of the two-story residential building on Pitong Gatang Street, identified as Vener A. Laygo, 53, died, while his brother, Anthony, 48, sustained serious burns and was rushed to the Mandaluyong City Medical Center (MCMC) by members of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Around 225 families were affected by the incident. They are now temporarily staying at the Barangay Vergara covered court.

The BFP said 112 houses and establishments were damaged by the fire, causing an estimated P1.1 million damage to property.
