Nadine Lustre, Greenpeace PH install solar panels in Siargao

DAVAO CITY – A day before Christmas Eve, actress Nadine Lustre and Greenpeace Philippines installed solar panels in a village in Siargao Island.

In a video posted by Greenpeace Philippines on Thursday, Dec. 23, the actress shared that they installed a solar panel for a solar charging station which can be used by residents to charge their phones and other devices.

"The whole of the island still doesn't have any power and no one really knows when it's gonna come back so phones will be useful to use as lights," the actress said.

"If there are people also who have rechargeable LED lights they can use that as well," she added.

Lustre also shared their experience in the rebuilding efforts on the island.

"Earlier, we were setting up the charging station, that's a table that's a bit wobbly na, it's really the kids who were helping me fix the table. They're the ones hammering nails inside para stable sya," she said.

"I'm just really happy that everyone's helping each other and there's a lot of people from outside of the island who want to help as well," she said.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace Philippines also installed solar panels in the island's relief operations hub "to allow staff and survivors to charge their equipment and devices."

"Typhoon Odette left a haunting path of destruction in popular destination Siargao Island, as the community struggles to access food, water, electricity, and communication channels," it said.

The Greenpeace Philippines also called on the government and the rich countries to take "urgent action to address the climate crisis."

"As we call for immediate #OdettePHRelief and recovery efforts, we hope the government and rich countries start taking urgent action to address the climate crisis," it said.
