Gordon to BSP: Retain heroes’ depiction in peso bills

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) should retain the depiction of the country’s national heroes in Philippine currency in recognition of their bravery and invaluable contribution to the country’s rich history and culture.

Senator Richard Gordon made the call on Sunday, as he opposed the BSP’s announcement in phasing out World War II hearoes in its experimental P1,000 polymber bolls set for release next year in favor of the Philippine eagle.

Gordon pointed out that former Supreme Court Chief Justice Jose Abad Santos, Brig. Gen. Vicente Lim, and Girl Scouts of the Philippines founder Josefa Llanes Escoda represent the largest denomination in circulation for their role in resistance against the invading Japanese.

The three represented different sectors of Philippine society — Lim for the military, Escoda for the women, and Abad Santos for the government.

“Ang salapi ay talagang mahahawakan ng lahat ng mamamayan yan at puwede nating ipagmalaki, may maikukwento tayo sa salapi pa lamang (Money is something every person can have a hand on and we can be proud of. We have something to talk about just by looking at the currency),” said Gordon, who is seeking re-election in the upcoming May 2022 elections.

A former tourism secretary, Gordon emphasized it is important to have heroes as role models for future generations.

The senator has underscored the importance of cultural preservation as it builds on the Philippines’ heritage and is being used to teach Filipinos and foreigners alike about its national identity.

He pointed out that a statue of Lapu-lapu, the country’s fearless warrior, was installed in Rizal Park and even that of Dr. Jose Rizal who is the country’s national hero.

“Ganoon rin sa salapi (It’s the same on money),” Gordon stressed.
