Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte clarified that basketball games and other contact sports are allowed in the city for as long as the minimum health protocols are observed.
In a press conference at the Quezon City Hall on Tuesday, Nov. 30, Belmonte was asked about the guidelines of the local government regarding contact sports as there are those who reportedly prohibit the activities and the use of courts in some barangays even as Metro Manila was already placed under the Alert Level 2 status.
Based on the resolution released by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority(MMDA), participants to the contact sport must be fully-vaccinated.
Belmonte said that the city is not strict about the wearing of face masks while the participants are playing.
She added that the city's barangay chairmen agreed not to allow audiences in the venues, thus prohibiting bystanders inside and outside the courts.
Belmonte also said barangay officials are permitted to issue their own guidelines, in coordination with the local government, to ensure the safety of the participants.
Contact sports were allowed by the MMDA in Metro Manila on Nov. 12 after the region was placed under Alert Level 2.
Metro Manila remains under Alert Level 2 until December 15.
