De Asis, Dumagpi rule PSC Para Chess tilt


John Franz De Asis and Aime Dumagpi bested their rivals to capture their respective division titles in the 2021 Philippine Sports Commission-Pilipinas Para Games Online Chess Competition over the weekend.

De Asis, a native of Iloilo, finished with 5.5 points on five wins and one draw in the six-round tournament for the P30,000 top prize in the P1-Men (Physically Impaired) category.

His victories came at the expense of Apollo Cabilan in the first round, Season Mervick Tiu in the second, Rogelio Clemente in the third, Sol Tiamzon in the fourth and Ronnie Villa in the fifth.

He drew the sixth and final round with Eric Abanco.

Abanco of Bacolod City came in second with 5 points for the runner-up honors and the P20,000 cash purse, while Jordaine Tupaz of Talisay City settled for third and the P10,000 consolation prize.

Rounding up the Top 10 were Alexis Elinon, Joseph Gregana, Ralph Anthony Velasco, Villa, Tiamzon, Ricardo Merano and Max Dave Tellor.

Meanwhile, Dumagpi downed Clarence Oreña twice to claim the P1-Women’s title.

Other winners were Geronimo Torres in B1-Men (Totally Blind), Yoland Pespes in B1-Women, Mark Christian Evangelista in B2-Men (Visually Impaired), and Siera Mae Requiron in B2-Women.

The three-day event aims at strengthening the grassroots program in the sport for people with disabilities.
