Cebu City mayor dies, 70

CEBU CITY—Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella passed away at dawn on Friday, Nov.19. He was 70.

City officials led by Vice Mayor Michael Rama, Councilors Dave Tumulak and Joel Garganera, confirmed the mayor’s passing.

“Today, I have lost a good friend and partner and the City of Cebu has lost a great public servant,” Rama said in a Facebook post.

Labella, a former deputy Ombudsman, had been in and out of hospital.

He had taken an indefinite leave of absence due to complications from pneumonia and minor sepsis.

In a press briefing early this month, Labella’s family revealed that the mayor had to be taken to the Intensive Care Unit of a private hospital.

The mayor was diagnosed with prostate cancer 12 years ago.

In January 2021, Labella was hospitalized due to an ear infection.
