Pacquiao: 'My position on the death penalty remains unchanged'

Senator Emmanuel D. Pacquiao on Wednesday, Nov. 3 said his position on the death penalty issue remains unchanged.

‘’I have authored Senate Bill 189 to push for the re-imposition of the death penalty for heinous crimes specifically drug trafficking and drug manufacturing,’’ Pacquiao said.

Aside from drug trafficking and drug manufacturing, it would be good to include the crime of plunder to be given the death penalty, he explained.

Nevertheless, there is a pressing need for a thorough reform in the justice system so that the innocents would not meted that supreme penalty, he pointed out.

‘’We have to overhaul the three pillars of our criminal justice system to make sure that only the criminals are punished,’’ he added.

In a related development, Pacquiao said a petition filed with the Commission on Elections seeking to disqualify former Senator Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. from seeking the presidency is already being handled by Marcos’ lawyers.

‘’Let us focus on solving the sufferings of the people because of this pandemic,’’ he pointed out.

‘’Within the limits of my power, I will try to reach every corner of this country to try help our countrymen,’’ he added.
